As part of the curriculum that our students follow at GIAS, we have had a training talk carried out by Mireia, a person who has been and is linked to the Guttmann Institute
The Institut Guttmann’s main objective is to promote, encourage and ensure full rehabilitation of people affected by spinal cord injury, acquired brain injury or other neurological disabilities, to develop research and teaching in the field of neuroscience, and to give them support and services to achieve a satisfactory social reintegration while contributing to the full recognition of their rights and effective equalizing of opportunities
Article n. 7 Institut Guttmann Foundation Statutes
Mireia, based on her personal experience before, during and after suffering a serious traffic accident, has shown us how important our daily lives are and how many actions we can do, individually and as a group, in order to avoid accidents, how to help the person who needs it and to ‘normalize’ the world of disability, from the breakdown of architectural barriers that still exist, to simple respect and compliance with the norm in front of a ‘P’ space signal in a mall, as an example.
There have been very emotional moments throughout the talk that have made us aware of a reality that is not far away … she has talked about the desire to live, the physical and mental strength that a person can get to move on and fight, from the disappointments that are being made when her reality, her day to day, in tenths of a second it turns 180º and ALL her surroundings also changed … her job, friends, the capacity that she needed to reinvent herself …
Especially she thanked the great luck of having a family and friends ALWAYS at her side and that this has been and it is one of the main reasons for continuing to fight and to move forward day by day.
For all of us, it has been a true life lesson … Thank you Guttmann Institute for your work and Thank you Mireia for your message of strength and courage!
